VCP4-DT and VCP5-DT Study Guide

This is an on-going study guide for VMware View. The exam for VMware View 5 is currently in beta stage; hence this guide is based on 4.X View exam blueprints v1.2 but applying for VCP5-DT hopefully without massive changes.

1. Objective 1.1 – Install View Composer

Knowledge    Required

  •  Describe  minimum  hardware  and  software  requirements  for  installation
  •  Describe  Composer  database  and  connectivity
  •  Identify  Composer  service  and  dependencies
  •  Perform  the  installation  of  View  Composer

Describe  minimum  hardware  and  software  requirements  for  installation
VMware View Composer provides linked-clones capability and is installed on the vCenter (physical / virtual) managing the ESXi hosts for VMware View Deployments. It requires VMware View Premier Licensing to be used. It is not supported with vCenter virtual appliance.

View Composer is able to be installed on the following software Requirements:

  • Supported Windows version for vCenter : Windows 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise Base or SP1.  Supported vCenter version -> 4.0 u1, 4.1U3 and 5.0 onwards
  • vCenter must support static IP with valid DNS resolution (which is most of the case for deployments

Describe  Composer  database  and  connectivity

  • View Composer Requires a database to store data. These Data include configuration settings including: vCenter Server Connections: Active Directory Connections, Linked-clone information such as deployed by View Composer, Replicas created by View Composer
  •  Each View Composer requires each own database.
  • The database for View Composer can be residing on the vCenter server or a remote database if necessary. If the vCenter is an All-in-one, (ie vCenter and SQL) assign more RAM to the vCenter
  • Remote SQL authentication must be provided if using a remote MS SQL server – remember to provide the System DSN for View Composer
  • Supported SQL platform includes:

 Identify  Composer  service  and  dependencies

  • Remember about Windows Firewall – the default SOAP port 18443 must be allowed if Windows Firewall is in used on the vCenter System.
  • VMware Universal File Access Service must also be allowed in Windows Firewall.
  • The path and folder information for linked-clones VM must not be changed manually in vCenter. View Administrator is used to change this information; else View Manager cannot look up the linked-clones in vCenter if changes are made with vCenter.
  • Ensure enough ports at the vSwitch level to support the total number of virtual nics deployed by linked-clones on the ESXi/ESX host
  • Ensure enough CPU / MEM resources are residing in the ESXi / Cluster to support the amount of linked-clones required
  • Storage vMotion is not supported for linked-clones
  • View Composer requires DNS resolution to be working – Active Directory and View Connection Server name resolution must be resolvable..
  • Antivirus Operation should be staggered to reduce I/O and performance related issues. (Look up on Trend Micro Deep Security…

Perform  the  installation  of  View  Composer

– DSN can be created during the installation

– Remember the default port required for VMware View Composer
